As a future Criminal Lawyer I am looking forward to applying my legal skills to real-world problems, to ensure the efficient functioning of our criminal justice system. I recently completed a double degree comprised of a Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Politics and International Relations with a minor in Philosophy.
I am currently a Law Clerk at Jay & Co Barristers and Solicitors, under the guidance of Principal Lawyer Esan Pilai. This exposure to criminal defence practice is allowing me to refine my legal knowledge, giving me the confidence to pursue my ambitions of becoming a proficient solicitor advocate, to uphold the rule of law for all those who I represent.
At Jay & Co Barristers and Solicitors, as a Law Clerk in a Criminal Defence Practice I am consistently challenged in this environment and have numerous responsibilities such as:
- Assisting Solicitors by conducting legal research in various areas of criminal law within the Summary and Indictable Jurisdiction.
- Liaising with Counsel in briefed matters by drafting memorandums and records of court proceedings.
- Shadowing solicitor advocates in the Magistrates’ and County Court.
Additionally, learning the advocacy work which is required to excel in the criminal law profession. In the future after admission, I am eager to learn the intricacies of criminal trial and evidence, to ultimately grow my knowledge and be able to instruct and appear in complex criminal cases.
